What is an air circuit breaker?

A high voltage air circuit breaker is an important safety device for any power line. It is a switch that will automatically activate once a surge or other fault is detected. Its design purpose is to prevent system overload, which may damage devices connected to the power supply or cause fires.

The theory of circuit breakers was first proposed by Thomas Edison in 1879, but the first model to use air instead of fuses was not invented by the American electrical company Westinghouse Electric until 1949.
